Injection Sclerotherapy (for flare / thread veins)
The fluid used for the injections is designed to irritate the veins and so after your procedure it is common for there to be bruising, discolouration and itch. It is very important not to scratch the area that has been treated as you may break the skin, leading to an ulcer
Please avoid sun exposure (included artificial UV exposure such as sunbeds) to the treatment areas for 2-4 weeks. Sun exposure can cause the skin to become darken and this can become permanent.
Hot showers and hot baths are to be avoid for 2 weeks as are visits to Spas and Sauna rooms
We encourage you to mobilise and walk after sclerotherapy. Exercise is okay, but try and avoid impact sports and strenuous exercise (e.g spin classes) for a week after treatment.
Some aching and pain (especially at night) can occur after sclerotherapy treatment. Usually this does not need pain relief but it is ok to take paracetamol or similar light analgesia. Any excessive pain should be reported to your consultant surgeon
If you have had a larger varicose vein treated or some foam sclerotherapy administered then it is normal for the vein to become a hard lump. Usually this will slowly disappear
Radio-frequency ablation (for varicose veins)
After the procedure your leg will have a bandage wrapped around it. This bandage can be removed after 24 hours. You
are free to shower at this time. Please use tepid water and do not soak in a bath.
Use the compression stockings we have provided for you afterwards. We suggest wearing these for one week, although there
is no harm in wearing then for longer. Some patients find it more comfortable to do so.
You can take off the stockings overnight
We encourage you to mobilise and walk after any procedure. Exercise is okay, but try and avoid impact sports and strenuous exercise (e.g spin classes) for a week or two after treatment.
We suggest that you don't fly for two weeks before and two weeks after any procedure.
